THE LION'S PAUSE
with MOLLY E. SHERMAN
STEWARDSHIP CHAIRPERSON
Tithing - It's a Bargain!
Mention tithing and you may get a blank stare. Many people don't know what it means. If you get a shudder in response, it probably means they do know what it means - the biblical standard of giving 10% of your income to God.
At last year's Bishop's Conference on Stewardship (a daylong meeting that is much more enjoyable than it sounds, and you are invited to join me in attending this year's conference in September), I learned that there are actually 3 biblical standards of giving:
The first biblical standard for giving is 100%. "Worship the Lord thy God with ALL your heart and mind and spirit." Whoa! If I give all, what's left for mc, and for my family??
Okay, moving right along, the second biblical standard for giving is 50%. "Love your neighbor as yourself," If you're truly loving your neighbor as yourself, then you're willing to share everything with him, 50 - 50. Not too many of us love our neighbors that much, (He always mows his lawn at 8 o'clock Saturday morning. I'm not giving him anything but a piece of my mind!)
Well, then, the 10% biblical Standard of giving starts to seem like quite a bargain, doesn't it!
Yours in Christ,

Molly E. Sherman,
Stewardship Chairperson

Day of Prayer - June 22
Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori is calling for a Day of Prayer for the Upcoming Lambeth Conference and for the Anglican Communion.
"I would bid your prayers for openness of spirit, vulnerability of heart, and eagerness of mind, that we might all learn to see the Spirit at work in the other", she wrote. "I bid your prayers for a peaceful spirit, a lessening of tension, and a real willingness to work together for the good of God's whole creation."
She recommends the prayer found on page 515 of the Book of Common Prayer, as a starting place.
HAVE A SAFE, FUN SUMMER!!!
